I bought a Goniopora frag and in the pictures it was open and full. Obviously a smaller frag, but my intent is to grow it out. It arrived today and was closed up due to shipping, but now I can see the skeletal structure and it obviously has been through some kind of stress/die off in the past.

I don’t know if the frag is now stable, or if its in process of decay/recession, or if it’s recovering. I don’t think Goniopora will re-encrust over the dead portion.

Bottom line, do you think I was sold a healthy frag, and if it came like this would you be concerned enough to take it up with the seller? Last photo is the wysiwyg photo it was sold as

Are the middle two your pictures or theirs? If yours, yeah it's fine, if only the top ones are yours, maybe... depends on the shipping conditions/method.

Gonis retract really far, in my experience, and it hasn't been uncommon to see them quite pulled in with no polyp showing when irritated. Brownish overall color isn't a great sign, but I'm not sure it's actually tissue loss or just that the base doesn't have the coloration of the top.

How much was it? How was it represented. This matters in the overall calculus to me.

Gonis grow forward, they do not encrust back over where they were. Usually when you cut them, there can be some die off around the edges.

If the 2 middle pics are yours, it actually looks pretty good. At least the live tissue looks vibrant and it did open nicely.

For $100, I think it seems like a decent deal. If that takes off you won’t even see the skeleton portion. I’ve got like 40 gonis so I know a little something about them.

Sweet! Thanks! For a few hours after delivery I think the colors are coming in nice. Can’t wait to see what it turns into!

I’ve got a few gonis I’ve been growing out but none of mine had die off like this. I assumed it wouldn’t grow over it

It's fine. Old areas are die off are no big deal, so long as they are just that... old. I don't see any fresh bare skeleton, should be just fine.

It’s already opening enough to conceal the spot. But if goni won’t grow over it, then will this encrust in all directions except the area of die off? Like a pie with a slice missing ?
