ok...as this is 4th time a reply has mentioned an acclimation box....I have to ask (please don't shout at me) why would I use one ??

New fish are often stressed and established fish sense this 'weakness'. This can put new fish 'behind the 8ball' so to speak. 1-3 days in the acclimation box allows the new fish to not be too stressed and allows the established fish to work out the worst of their aggression.

I had a pair of Leopard Wrasses, a Yellow Coris, Melanarus and a 4 Line Wrasse all at the same time. Never any fighting and very colorful movement through the tank. Maybe it helped, but I threw in a bunch of Copepods and Amphipods every month, so they were always grazing through the liverock and sand bed.

I added to my 150g DT the following wrasses using an aclimation box (in that order): Yellow Coris, Melanurus, Cleaner, Carpenter and Red Solorensis. All of them doing very well. Next to be added an Orange-back fairy after 4 weeks of QT. I add pods every 3 months.

For what it's worth. I just added a female leopard to my well established tank population which includes an adult male melanarus and they've all been fine.

Just be extra vigilant adding the orangeback, as it and solorensis are closely related(being in the same complex) so aggression may be worse.

To answer the question, those two should be fine together.

I would recommend using an acclimation box to gauge any possible aggression between them. I keep new additions in one anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

I recommend against sand in a social acclimation box, as the new wrasses will get used the lighting schedule of the dt sooner and won't be in the acclimation box for too long.

Agree - sand also defeats the purpose of the fish in/out of the box seeing each other if the fish in the box is buried.

4 line is much different than a 6 line when it comes to temperament. I had all of those Wrasses together for almost two years before I sold the tank, never an ounce of aggression.

4 line is much different than a 6 line when it comes to temperament.

The poor temperament of Pseduocheilinus species is a characteristic of the genus, unfortunately. Some species are not as bad as others in the genus, but all species of the genus tend to be belligerent once mature. Of course, there are always exceptions, but it's best not to gamble pet's lives on exceptions. ;)
As a hardly conservative rule, all Pseudocheilinus wrasses should be avoided for mixing with any other wrasses.

I had all of those Wrasses together for almost two years before I sold the tank, never an ounce of aggression.

2 years may well have been shy of the 4 line's maturity.

unfortunately I may have a problem. The leopard wrasse is now in the tank...it disappeared under the sand for 24 hrs and then came out..and just sat on the sand. The melanarus came to say 'hello' and then went on it's merry way. I have been watching the leopard for a while now..it rarely moves and nothing else is going near it. Tank has been fed and it didn't even bother to lift its head to eat...oh dear.;Nurse

maybe I spoke too soon...seems like he has done a lazarus and returned from the nether world...AND..the melanarus doesn't seem to care.
