WTD with an idle reactor

Hi

Have two media reactors hard piped into my system. In one I run rox 0.8 carbon 24/7. The other at the moment is just collecting dust. Originally I plumb it for future use of gfo if needed. Plus the fact that I have ocd and need to have matching component lol. Hate now that it is never in used so Curious what are some other option that I could run through it when gfo is not in use that could provide some addition benefit to the tank while running but not later case harm should I have to switch what ever is recommended for its intended purpose.

1. Biopellets (If Nitrate Control Needed)​

• Use if you have elevated nitrates and want to reduce them biologically.
• Needs good flow and a skimmer, as it promotes bacterial growth that gets skimmed out.
• Note: Not a “swap-on-a-whim” type, but viable if nutrients are creeping up.
• Could swap out later for GFO—just flush the reactor well.

2. MarinePure Gems or Ceramic Bio Media​

• Biological filtration booster—especially good in newer tanks or low rock setups.
• No risk, won’t leach anything or remove trace elements.
• Inert and swap-friendly. Just rinse before use.
• Can run passively with moderate flow (not a tumbling media).

3. Purigen (Polishes Organics)​

• Great for water clarity and light organic control.
• Rechargeable with bleach.
• Won’t interfere with your GFO swap later.
• Needs to be bagged or in a mesh insert inside the reactor.

4. Seachem PhosGuard or Phosphate Rx Resin​

• Milder than GFO, helps catch phosphate drifts without being too aggressive.
• Good for low-nutrient tanks where GFO might drop PO₄ too fast.
• Easy to remove when you want to switch back.

5. Poly-Filter Pads (Cut into Discs)​

• Will absorb organics, metals, and medications, but not in excess.
• Good “catch-all” polish between other uses.
• Won’t interfere with future GFO use, just swap and rinse reactor.

6. Chemi-Pure Blue or Elite​

• Another broad-spectrum option—carbon + ion exchange resins.
• Helps polish, reduces organics, and buffers pH mildly.
• Safe to remove or swap out as needed.

If your tank is running just fine, put in some biomedia wouldn’t hurt (k1, ceramic etc). All chemical medias would affect the tank one way or another, especially if you’re not looking for a super clean tank for sps. Can make it into a chaeto reactor as well with some mods
