If you get fish with different enough behaviors/habitats and can meet their dietary needs, higher density seems to work reasonably. Almost no aggression, even, though a couple of the pairs needed some introduction time before that was the case.

Nothing that I feed! I've had a few over the last few years because they're cute little grazers and they really don't get bothered by others much (even conspecific aggression is the most chill aggression I've seen in fish). Mine eat some hair algae on things, but spend a good bit of their time sifting sand.
