I have one and I love it! It is always on the hunt for food. It really reminds me of a mandarin goby the way it hunts for food. But it will eat absolutely anything you put in the tank as well. They can be bullies but mainly of other wrasses. They are great fish and I will always have one in all my tanks.

So this fish eats pods and shrimp and snails and crabs and everything else??? It's like a disposal for everything?? Wow! Can it be kept with a mandarin? I just got one last weekend and don't want to interfere with it. I like it vey much.....

Not really sure. I have a big tank (180) with a fuge crawling with pods, but mine seemed more interested in meaty foods than the pods.

I know this is a really old thread, but found it through a Google search and there are alot of info and nice photos of the melanusus wrasse here. I just got one of these a little while ago. Always wanted one. I have seen mine make a snack of a snail snail and he it a busy, hungry, beautiful fish!

Gorgeous, very active, and one of my favorite fish. I have seen him go after new snails and crabs that I put in the tank other than that pretty model citizen except he steals food right from my corals mouths! HA!

I have a male in my frag tank. Honestly, my favorite fish atm. Voracious eater and a flatworm SLAYER! I had a commensal flat worm problem that I couldn't get rid of with FE or Bayer dips and qt tank. I haven't seen one in 2 months...probably still a couple there. Either way, this wrasse is my new bff.

Thread was started before I had an aquarium, but I too love my Melanurus. Yes, he's a lover of Escargot, so I ended up switching to Trochus Snails. At least their ability to right themselves gives them a fighting chance!!!

Here is mine. He doesn't really bother anything that i have seen. If a fish gives him attitude he will stand up for himself. He is a fast fish that is always cursing around doing something.

I *just* got a melanarus 2 weeks ago.

Heads up, you may not see it the first week. They burrow in the substrate every night, or when first introduced to a tank, they chill there for a while. I was scared and posted on here asking people if the fish died, so, heads up on that!

He's a GREAT fish so far, though. The second he came out of the sand, he was the most active fish in the tank, and he's forced my 2 damsels to be more active as well.

Um, I have had like 3-4 hermit crab deaths and possibly an emerald crab death (not sure if death or molt) since I put it in though. I've personally seen him pecking at snails and hermits. I'm willing to take that hit though, he's super active and pretty.

Mines has been a model citizen until I did not feed him properly for 2 days and then he took out my cleaner shrimp.
Other then that I had them both in the same tank for about a year and a half.
