How big was the clam may I ask?
I just got the smallest Maxima,(_this_ big_) put him in my tank.
Went back to the reef store,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
when I walked in the door, a good sized hermit crab was rolling him around, in his claws. I snatched the hermit, and he had a death grip on the little clam,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Little Max, is now in a play pen......safe from monsters..........

If your yellow tang felt it was underfed it could definitely be the one. Yellow, Hippos and other common tangs, if underfed will "go for the clam" ... so to speak

hmmm ... then i'm clueless. See if you can get a small one cheap (around my way the cheapest clams get are $30... so this is highly unlikely) and put it in the tank and watch it for a while.

I'm a curious guy so I would pay $30 just to find out.... i'm probably alone on that though.

What kind of snails do you have? I had a whelk (didn't know it was in the tank) that ate one of my clams.

For that to happen overnight is baffling. If it died over a period of days or weeks, I'd say the bysal threads were torn removing it from the other tank. The only thing I can think of that'd eat it THAT FAST is the Yellow Tang. Even if you had a lot of Clam Eating snails, it'd take them a few days....

I had some similiar issues a few years ago, turned out what I thought were nassarious snails were welks, I probly had 15 of them that had hichhiked on live rock, I had them for years, and once I got a clam they went into action. It seemed the welks would kill the clam, and between them and the fire shrimps they could eat a clam quick. just because one thing in the tank killed it doesnt mean it ate it alone, most things in a reef tank are opertunistick feeders, they may not kill it but will definatly eat it. Anyway, just some ideas.
