This morning I dumped out the cat litter box to clean it out right next to a bucket of fresh saltwater that was ready for a water change.
The bucket had a lid on it but there is a 1-2 inch cut out for wires to go through which left an area for bacteria and litter dust to get into the bucket.

Is the water still okay to use or should I dump it and make more water?

As long as the liter is mainly inert, as they do add chemicles to litter for clumping, spe,ial coloring to show or determine things, etc. You chould be able to tell looking in and read the ingredients.

There’s a 2 stage recovery plan;

a) use the water

b) avoid doing it next time

Unfortunately, it’s a 10 gallon bucket. The water was ready to go for my weekly water change which is due today.
It should be fine. You could also run some GAC (granular activated carbon) for a day or two if you want. What size tank is it

10 gallon salt vs a reef tank issue. If you think its contaminated, dont use. Its a bit of a waste of money I understand. But if your this worried where your asking on here and worried, dont risk. Youll have a much better peace of mind. And not worrying far out ways lost water. Hopefully which ever you decide works out.

I'd use it.

As much as we all put into our hobby aquariums, if I even questioned this, it is not worth the risk, just do new water, and do the change tomorrow instead. Just my 2 cents worth

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
