Reef with SUBS

Before you spend too much on a sub that is super low frequency, make sure that your other gear can handle it. No need to spend so much on a sub only to have a receiver/whatever start to take a dump at 24 hertz and cannot get anywhere near single digit levels.

The reciever we got is the Denon A1H

We didnt want to do seperate amps and reciever so this was the one as we also wanted access to 15channel surround. It can do 17 but only amplify 15 at once. We are liking the 9.2.6 setup so far.

The sub itself has an internal amp that can push the 4,300 watts of peak power and almost 2k rms, but it does need its own dedicated 20am plug. So 1 is being fitted with a gfi and new ups surge protector added for security.

I have a pair of 18" FI Infinite Baffle subs in a Home Theatre in the same room as my main display. You almost have to leave the room if they are turned up too far. What do you want to know? My fish do not care. I had to reinforce the walls for me, which is normal.

Yummy sound!!!

Have you heard what even a REAL 1000w of subs sounds like in a house? It can make you want to leave the room. In most cases, 300w is more than enough.

I had dual McIntosh 600w Monos on my FIs and that was just stupid... not only a waste of those great amps, but also way too much power. I did end up with a 1000w monoblock, but it rarely goes above 250-300w if I had to guess... also a waste, but it is not like wasting McIntosh amps on subs in a theatre when I can waste them on playing my Vinyl.

If you have to have that much sub juice, then cool. Maybe I am getting old, but I would spend the money on a center or something.

Both of my 18" IBs are in the front sides under the front L&R speakers - this is just where they fit and I don't think that it matters much as long as there is no sound from a port. I can tell porting sound directionally, but not sealed or IB sound installs.

Also, make sure that you get some good L&R that can play down to at least 80hz well so that you can keep that out of the sub. If you really want it to slam I would not have it trying to play over 80hz and get unclear. The morons (spend SO much to leave them behind) who had our house before put in B&W 3 ways even in the rears and sides which are amazing and can easily do down to 60 hz (I cut them at 80). This helps out the IBs a lot.

The center and sub are the 2 most important! At the moment PSA also does a dual 10" center that is pretty slick. Also has the LR....

Perlisten audio also has a center amd LR I've been eyeing ohhh so nice.

After all the research and discussions 15" sub for the 3500cuft just won't get what we want so we were going to get dual 18" and understand that we would never really use them fully but more for acoustic pleasantries. Evening out the sound where nulls are and such.

When we were talking to Tom the owner of PSA we originally were going to get dual 18" but he of course threw the 21" at a price we couldn't say no.

And great advice about the crossover!

It's going to be interesting dialing it in for sure!

My setup is slowly growing up and getting into the REAL HT stuff.

I started with klipsch haha dont give me too much grief lol

Right now I only have klipsch RP 500ii for LR and all surround

Klipsch RP450c for center

They do all right but I definitely will upgrade very soon.

That Denon looks like the typical 20-20k hz, so no need to spend extra for a single digit hz amp and subwoofer.

BTW - my new deal is to NOT have all of the video go through the receiver/processor. Smart TV with all of the apps. Blu Ray and Apple TV to the smart TV through HDMI. HDTV antenna. Sound goes out the TV through optical to my McIntosh which runs the surround - one setting which is just for whatever is on the TV. With all of the upgrades to TVs, components, etc. and even a 4 year old receiver/processor (or whatever) starts to get dated. I just get a nice TV with good optical sound which are better about updating themselves than a receiver is. Easier this way for me. Receiver can play the radio or streaming, but the only video sound is through the TV.

No grief. Kinda like fish tanks where only a few can notice the difference between MH and LEDs, most will never know if you had a Sony or Pioneer surround sound vs a $100k one. Most anything is going to be pretty good. This is a big deal for me and I used to outfit all of my cars, but my last few have had really awesome Lexicon systems that are not even really upgradable without tearing the whole car apart.

Plus, theatre is not like audio. I have McIntosh mt5 turntable, processor, amps and Focal Grande Utopias. It is more important to have these for music than theatre. You can spend $250k on a home theatre and people just want to chit chat and stuff and barely listen.

For reference, our theatre room is 16 feet wide, about 24 feet long with 10 foot ceilings. Those dual 18" IBs can make you want to leave the room at about 500 watts. You cannot have a conversation at much over 300w.

Home office / nano tank room setup
These speakers are legendary, designed by Henry Kloss. Anyone comes in this room for a demo asks me where I’m hiding the sub lol. Then they are in disbelief that there is no separate sub. The towers are just incredible.

Molding is standing against the wall in the corner, I’m in the process of hanging a movie screen / projector, running wires, etc

Besides reefs, home audio is my other passion.

People are reporting getting around 14hz-16hz with the denon BIT I will never go there!

This is strictly 90% theatre and 8% gaming 2% music hahahso complete opposite of what you have had going on for sure.

Definitely understand about the optical cable.

However all the new fancy dolby decoding and auro 3d needs the hdmi to get all the channels we want to use.

My jbl gear is great but it’s inefficient and takes a lot of power to drive. Those towers with the dual 8” subs are biamped and take up two channels each. I love the sound though and movies sound insane in my game room

my personal advice - go Klipsch - very efficient and easy to power, great sound quality. I’ve been thinking of selling my jbl 5.1 system and replacing with klipsch 5.1.2 to get atmos surround

My master bedroom has a Klipsch soundbar and sub and for a soundbar, it’s very good

You should get the rp8060 fa as your front speakers. What’s the ceiling height? Does your receiver support atmos?

Klipsch is know for having a bright sound to it, I do like that. And with age you lose your upper frequency hearing. So it’s not that bad to me lol.

My jbl towers are 4 way
2x8” subs, a mid, a tweeter, and a super tweeter. The response freq is 36Hz - 40kHz

It goes beyond the audible spectrum of sound and is supposed to help enhance a sense of spaciousness and treble response, blah blah blah. These speakers to me are more theatre oriented but they still sound excellent with music and gaming.
