  10. Has the hobby gotten too expensive and how does it compare to the past?

I have been in this hobby for a long time, but I am not going to act like an old codger and say I remember when Flame Angels were a quarter and corals were a dollar. Nor am I going to get into a discussion of how a frag costing more than a major appliance is good for the hobby or even what it means. I have difficulty comprehending this as well as how so much money and so many new hobbyists have come into the hobby. The latter at east in part driving the former. Also it is not my job to tell...
  11. Your Guide to Aquarium Photography #7 - Post-processing

Post-processing is a very controversial topic with many people opposing post-processing pictures simply because people have optimized processing techniques to make coral colors pop beyond reality. This has led to inflated prices and lots of disappointment when one purchases a coral based on an over-processed picture. Regardless of the above, post-processing remains a critical step in the workflow of a photographer, and with tank photography, post-processing is important to bring the pictures...
  12. DIY Universal Battery Backup For Your Reef

A few days ago (3/2/2018) I lost power in the recent Nor'easter. I had a battery backup system in place, and thankfully it functioned fairly well. However, I had upgraded my aquarium since I had originally planned out the battery backup and the system did not last nearly as long as I wanted it to. The battery took frequent recharges from my car to keep going. I've since re-evaluated my system and in the process, decided to write a post about general-purpose battery backup designed for reefs....

  16. Fragging 101 I Goniopora

Methodology: The method I use for fragging the majority of hard corals is primarily the same with the cutting tooling being an Inland band saw. Cooling liquid used is fresh mixed saltwater with enough iodine to color it a light amber. This helps to disinfect cuts as they’re made which has shown to greatly increase frag survival. All corals are stored during cutting in a small bucket holding water taken directly from their home aquarium. This water is used both to keep them wet as well as for...
  17. R2R Reef of the Month: Joe's 270-gallon SPS Reef - March 2018

A big thank you to Reef2Reef for choosing my tank for their Spotlight. This tank is going into its 10th year so this spotlight is really appreciated, even more so that this is the 2nd version of this tank. The first crashed after a nasty bryopsis infestation led me to discover that an invasive sponge got into my tank and eventually forced me to remove my coral and rocks. Then a series of crashes set me back. I was thinking at one point I would have to break the whole tank down and start from...

Social media, discussion groups and dedicated applications on mobile phones coupled with improvements in mobile phone camera technology have made for more use of mobile phone cameras for aquarium photography.
  22. Things I Miss About the Hobby

Being with some of my long-time friends a bit ago, we started reminiscing about the early years of the hobby and some of the things that used to be common or major parts of the hobby and how many of them were gone. I am typically not someone who dwells on the past, but I must admit that I do miss some of the things that made the early days “fun”. Maybe I was just young and found simpler things more enjoyable or maybe it was because everything was simply new and exciting. Regardless of the...

  25. Cave Tank Build Tutorial

Hows it going, thank you for joining me on this build. One day I was watching a nature show and saw this deep sea scene with hot volcanic spouts and shrimps on them and I said "I want one" and on the journey I went to find me a cave tank. I already had a pretty good feeling that this wasn't going to be something you can buy and so I decided to make me one. I took me a couple weeks to fully complete, but in the end it came out great and I loved every second of it. This is that build and how I...

  31. R2R Reef of the Month Spotlight: Rob's 300g Deep Dimension - January 2018

I have been in the reefing hobby since 1996 close to 22 yrs. I've had freshwater aquariums since I was 7 yrs old, so I'm considered an old hand and pretty much a lifer. No breaks by the way, always had a tank running. This tank has been up and running since 2013 upgraded from a 185g which I had for 9 years prior. I've had about 3 reboots due to too much growth, which is a good problem and keeps my love of this hobby interesting and what I consider a piece of art that's always changing.

  35. Reefing After Dark – Bioluminescence in the Reef Aquarium

In all the years that I have been an aquarium hobbyist, there have been a few moments that have put me in awe of nature and the wonders contained within our oceans. Recently I have experienced one of these moments, and I feel it should be shared with the reefing community. I want to draw some positive attention to one of the natural wonders in our aquariums that often goes unnoticed. One topic that has always interested me is bioluminescence which is defined by Haddock, Moline, Case as...
  36. Heating large tanks with your gas hot water heater. Save 40% on energy cost!

On average, 40% (±15%) energy cost savings over electrical heaters (depending on how efficient your hot water heater is). For my tank (I have an abnormally cold basement), I use 1500w of heaters and temperatures drop slightly at night. I also have a 1000w metal halide lighting system, which takes over most of the heating for 8 hours. But I figure I can say I average 1500w of heating 6 months out of the year, for half of the day. So my yearly heating cost of my tank is approximately $375....

  39. Automatic Frozen/refrigerated food dispenser

I wanted a way to automate feeding of diverse and healthy foods to both corals and fish. Dried coral food and pellet food in an automatic fish feeder are decent options, but picky fish tend not to get fed, smaller foods are hard to accurately dispense, and the variety of the food is lacking. There have been successful attempts at frozen food dispensers, but they are too complex for my taste. So I made a refrigerated food feeder. The hardest part of this by far was getting the preservation of...
  40. Testing the Big 3 Parameters

After collecting a few tests, reading threads and new tests being released all the time I decided to put this article together. Did I learn a couple of things? Yes. I have learned not to rely on just one test only, but have a couple of test on hand to check against the other. Also there is always human error in testing
