You are the only person I know still using an under gravel filter.
Probably also the only system you know of running non stop for 50 years. Whats not to like? :)

My best decision was getting back into the hobby after 25 years away.
Next best decision was to clean and fill my 32 year tank and it held water.
Next was finding R2R and reading EVERYTHING I had missed in 25 yrs, there was soooo much to learn and relearn!!!

Oh so glad to be back in the deep end!!!
This forum is a better place because your back.
Thank you!!!

Mine was when I realized theres more success in keeping things simple. When I tried to do too much it became hard for everything to thrive. As soon as I setup a bare bones system I saw much more success
It often takes time in the hobby to realize that truth. Great example!

I use a RFUG in my 55 gallon feeder fish tank. Zero maintenance.

When you stop wondering if it's you or them and stop bothering to read the posts about nitrate tests, salinity testers
noisy overflows, salt brands, too high or low __________, QT, diseases, what is the best ____________, etc., etc,.

What I have works for me. Pretty much all that matters.

I tell people good morning and go on with my day.

A few of my good reefing decisions:
  • Taking it slow
  • Continually learning
  • Adding a water mixing station
  • Volunteering at conventions and shows
  • Getting involved with Reef2Reef and the Reef2Reef community
Nice! What shows? Coral Farmer’s Market? Reefapalooza? (2 of my favs)

I have volunteered at Reefapalooza and MACNA and plan to volunteer at the Florida Frag Swap this next year. I have worked at Reefapalooza and Aquashella and have attended several others. They all have different things to offer and I enjoy learning and building community at all of the shows that I attend.

Very cool! We’re in Arizona. Made it over to Reefapalooza Anaheim just before Covid hit. What a great time. Macna was scheduled to show in Az that following summer. It never happened.

UG filters were the bomb. Add a couple of powerheads and good to go. At my pet store, that was all I ran.
Coral seperation of at least 3" is a Must. Looks good

For me- Held the bacteria, tanks were clear and we didnt worry about nitrates, 2x a year, I ran reverse head and did a good cleaning and back to business. My store had 72 tanks and all were clear and trouble free.
I had a 125g at home with queen and french angel and a few grunts and trigger and again- Trouble free tank

Wow impressive! Some of us just cringe at the thought of 10 lbs of detritus in the tank.
