Good night everyone! Busy day. Had it's ups and downs.

Ok family, I have a question for you, my dad's tank is not going well, I went there yesterday and fixed the flow a little but he is losing corals even though he has more stable parameters than me and in numbers similar, there are 2 things that I see in his tank, 1- he has too much chaeto and I read that when you have a lot of it it can compete with the corals in the consumption of trace elements, 2- it is related to the 1st if I am correct and it is that he changes from 20 to 30 g every 2 or 3 months, with everything that we have been through in the family recently he has abandoned the tank a little but I would not want him to lose it and I am working on it to see if I can fix it for him. Do you think chaeto could be the problem? The tank has low nutrients but not at 0 and the parameters are quite good and stable, the other thing I think I need to do is to do an ICP

What specific corals is he losing?

Lately I don't know what the right parameters are, But his are good, according to parameters I have carried my tank and what he has carried for a long time. Maybe Mg a little high 1580 but everything else good, Ca 440, Alk 7.9, No3 10, Po4 0.06, Ph 8.0

Alk is in the "low" range for some corals (SPS mainly), PO4 is almost 0 (with a +/- 0.03 error margin). SPS may want more. Nitrates are fairly lowish but not bad. Softies probably want more.

Light and flow could be issues?

Also, does he run carbon? Potentially there could be sorry warfare (Toadstools and Leathers as well as some sponges release toxins into the water column to affect neighboring corals). Carbon helps limit these toxins.

Is his water dirty looking? Super clean looking? Clean, clear water means more direct feeding might be necessary.

Check his equipment for rust. Just throwing things out there.

@luis angel This would cause a big spike in algae potentially so you might see a big growth in cheato.

I was going to write an article about a year ago about household water supply and copper pipes.
I was answering a thread but got some push back from another member quite aggressive so I dropped it.
A faulty RO membrane, or one that needs a change can let a lot of unseen contaminants through without people thinking much about it.
Copper builds up in our tanks, even in small amounts. It takes to our rocks and sand and over time can build to a lethal level, unnoticed until weird coral issues.
How many times have you read a post where they say parameters are awesome but everything is dead.
Just me rambling on sorry guys and probably not the case here but my point is always, always have control over your water source.

Copper pipes are not bad UNLESS you let the water sit. If you flush first, then do a water draw it's not a huge amount of copper (or lead), if any. Copper will leach into the water (depending on the chemistry of the tap water), but only if it sits for a period.

I use tap water, but I always flush the line first.

@luis angel , what Joel said about the LFS water has a LOT of truth. They usually make HUGE batches at a time and rarely do any kind of quality checks. My buddy was doing the same thing and kept having cyano and diatom outbreaks after every water change. I told him to stop using their RODI and their salt mixes and the blooms went away.
