Are they as good as my husband thinks they are? Lol he's wanting to get a few for the house as our heat pump is getting up there in years and he thinks they will be cheaper to run and keep the house warm/cool if placed in the right areas.

They are quite good, it all depends on the brand as well and you have to look for a specific one that has a heater, the calculation is done the same as the split units, 1 ton for 400 square feet

So do I need the reef crystal or could I get the cheaper one?

I like instan ocean cause the parameters are lower and it is far easier to raise them if needed then to try and lower them. Also I am not keeping my numbers as high as reef crystals.
mine sit around Cal 450, ALK 9 and MG 1300-1350
Instant ocean is Cal 400 ALK 11and mg 1350.
reef crystals is Cal 400, ALK 13 and MG 1440...

I use novas polish #1 on my acylic...When I had a glass tank I used rainx...both products help keep water spots off and help with smudges. I also only use micro cloths..Paper towels cause scratches..

Figure out how much more I need them to take out of my check since they aren't taking out enough.

to figure out a close estimate is easy. First depends on how many checks 52 or 26 a year. Then take the amount you have to pay this year and divide it by number of checks(52/26) add that number to your current Federal withholding and make sure your State if you have State tax is at least 2.8% of Federal/ 3.0 is better. Hope that helps ya...
