There are certain ones that are made to go outside the sump I don't know anything about them but the ones to go in the sump come with the pump.

So they can go outside and inside your sump? Does it come with a pump or do you have to buy a separate one?

My point was, I own multiple skimmers and have 0 installed. But yes, some are hang-on-back style.

I like them, just have other uses for my sump. I used to use one on my previous reefs, but this one I decided I wanted the sump for anemones and clownfish.

Plus the last one I used, my Pincushion urchin at the wire and I never got around to rewiring it.

They're not bad and they're definitely worth using - if nothing else to help aerate the water. I use two air stones in the sump for aeration and I was dosing both phosphates and ammonium so extra export was not necessary.

I don’t have a skimmer. Do I need one? What does it really do? What would be a good one for my system? How much are they usually?

Skimmers remove waste and organics from the water column. They remove items that eventually become nitrate and phosphate. They do not remove nitrate or phosphate directly.

They add aeration and a slight ph increase

They are helpful but not necessary

Cost? 150-300 for average non monster tanks
