@kingranch2003 I have also used soil capped surgery sand following the Walstad method and it was great for the plants but if you are like me and like to move things around in the tank when you get tired of looking at it the same I wouldn't recommend it because when you pull up a plant the soil will come up and make a mess on the sand.

Great info Amanda thank you! I was checking out the Walstad method as well. I think I like father fish's method that seems self sustainable over a long period of time
