Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
When looking at a protein skimmer do I look at total water volume or just what's in the actual tank?
My tanks in the first 16 years of reefing, I went with a skimmer that was over sized for my tank. The skimmate looked like coffee with a splash of milk and smelled like death. I would have done the same but the chambers in my tank limited me.

Whatever a protein skimmer says it's rated for cut that in half.
Most go by tank size but I go by total water volume.
If you have a 75 gallon tank, 50 gallon sump and 110 total gallons of water your skimmer is coming in contact with ALL the water not just 75 gallons.
In your case you might have 125 gallons total water so a 250 skimmer probably right on the money.
Could even go bigger .
Just me. :)

Wait I can't math... my tank is 125 the sump is 50 so what size do I need?

240 and above is my recommendation.
You probably have 120 gallons total water after rocks, decor blah blah blah. :upside-down-face:
