looking at a canon EOS rebel t7 dslr. warning- im a total beginner. good camera or no?
Alright going to do a little explaining, might be lengthy, idk yet
So with cameras these days, you have two options: DSLR or Mirrorless. DSLRs are the traditional mechanics of a camera; light goes into the lens, bounces off the mirror, and thus you have a photo. Mirrorless is the same steps, except there is no mirror within the camera.
Now I have used DSLR cameras (Nikon 5600) is what I own, but have also looked at and watched mirrorless cameras be used in real time and personally I prefer those (will get to pros and cons).
DSLR Pros are that it is generally cheaper to buy those cameras, after-market lenses are far cheaper, and obviously, personal preference for a lot of people. Cons, you lose a lot of modern technology that is built into mirrorless cameras. For example, when you shoot with a mirrorless camera, what you see on the viewfinder is exactly how the photo is going to come out, so if it looks dark, bump the iso up, and you will see the change in real time. Not to mention mirrorless cameras generally shoot faster, and are able to process images quicker since their are less mechanics involved.
Anyway, back to your original question. Yes, the Rebel T7 is a good starter camera at a respectable price point.
Other cameras I would recommend would be the R50 or R10 by cannon. The sony A6600 (I love the small form factor of sony cameras plus they take some good photos). Nikon Z5, and Nikon 7500 (which is DSLR) are also good options. I tried to list cameras around the 1k mark or under that price. Just be aware a lot of companies are slowly discontinuing DSLR cameras so that might sway your opinion a little bit.
