I've always been curious about this whole thing with coral names and exorbitant prices.

How does it actually work?
Do you become famous selling corals or whatever, and then one day, by chance, you find a rare coral at your local fish store and decide to give it your own name and set whatever price you want?

I'm genuinely asking out of complete ignorance because I don't know how it works.

Good morning, everyone! We did end up seeing Christmas lights last night; however, we did not go to the burger joint. By the time we got over there, they were closing for the night. So we went to another place and left within 3 minutes of being there. Live music was playing, ear-piercing, and drunk people were everywhere (I didn't feel comfortable with River being there with the loud noise and environment). So with it being Tuesday, we ended up at a Mexican place, and yes, I had tacos for Taco Tuesday. Eventful night to say the least.

My family used to own land just east of Gatlinburg. Resort called Little Bit of Heaven and then Cobbly Nob. Yeah probably changed the name again. Spent lots of time fishing the trout pond and stream. Also drove my motorcycle all over the back roads. Hiked and pillaged the many candy stores downtown. Great memories! This was back in the 70's and I have never been back.

I am in agreement with you as, for me, John Denver was one-of-a-kind. Another one taken too early.

I think the crazy prices are due to the limited availability. If you have a "one-of-a-kind" coral and are only able to frag it once or twice a year, people will pay a premium to own it, grow it themselves and resell. Take for example the CC24K Mancini holy grail. He was fortunate to have found that torch and has since sold it to many hobbyists, who in turn grow it and sell it.

Nice...not $1500.00 nice but nice just the same! I used to buy 2000lb LC containers of live rock, fish and inverts for that...no way I could talk myself into spending that on one thumb nail of a coral...just me. I guess that is why my aquariums are still empty hahaha .
