It would depend on the levels of your nitrate and phosphate. You need to be careful and not bottom them out.

Again... No..... It's never wise to do large water changes the size you've been doing without knowing your parameters.

Freshwater angelfish died unexpectedly. No idea why. Salt tank is doing well. Gha growth has HALTED. I'm gonna try and do a big water change today since I haven't done one in a while. Do you guys think that's wise?

What are you calling big? If your tank is looking good and seems to be improving I would only do around 10% as large changes also change the biome more. Bigger changes are best when things are bad or trending towards bad, smaller when things are good or trending toward good.

Seems to be trending towards bad.. I should've done this before when I saw gha in my remora. Around 15 gallons is big right?

Let's see. If I remember correctly you have a 65 gallon with no sump therefore you probably have around 52 gallons of water in the tank (65 gallons * 80% average fill volume = around 52 gallons actual volume). A 15 gallon change would be about a 28.9% change (15 gallon wc divided by 52 gallons of water = .288 = 28.8%) so yes that is a large water change. Anything over 20% is usually considered large.

BTW nitrates and phosphate contribute to gha but gha can outcompete most other life forms for nutrients and nitrates and phosphates are nutrients so trying to eliminate them will hurt your other organisms before it will hurt the gha. Have you tried dosing bacteria like Microbacter 7?
