The basic idea, overly simplified and distilled down, is that all surfaces of your aquarium will have some kind of life on it, coral, algae, bacteria, fungi, etc. The bacteria is a natural part of the biome but things easily get out of whack in an aquarium due to their small size and closed ecosystem nature. Bacteria are probably the biggest single unsung hero in a reef tank, they are food for many organisms including SPS corals, they compete with algae and diatoms and dinos for food, they coat surfaces, they are a fundamental part of all higher life forms, they convert ammonia to nitrites and nitrates, etc.

Carbon dosing is all about feeding beneficial bacteria to improve your tank's health but it needs to be done judiciously so dosing bacteria is usually easier/safer. Brightwell Microbacter 7 is probably the best known and most widely used beneficial-bacteria supplement. They also make Clean which is also a bacterial supplement but focused more toward algae competition, it may be a good choice for you. Neither of those products contain much, if any, of the bacteria that serve as food sources for corals. The 'food' bacteria are products like Purple M or PNS Probio.

Got my front door fixed, so at least it's not falling off anymore, have a guy coming to replace it once the weather gets better. I at least unplugged the Christmas lights and I made up all for reef and topped off the afr and vinegar dosing containers, cleaned the sensor on my ato. If I get a little more ambitious later I will clean my skimmer cup and filter socks.

word of advice. unplugging lights is all that's needed. you'll only have to hang the lights back up next year.
