got my hands on some live phyto...been doing research about it, thinking I will set up a small system to grow my own and feed the new tank...
anyone here doing it or used it?

Yep I did it for a while and then it crashed. The reason it crashed is because I got a low quality strain that likely was packaged a while back. I just started up a new culture and its been doing very well. (I tried resetting the culture with a bad single strain as I wanted to change what type I was culturing). I will post pictures in a post after this of what it looked like on Thursday and what it looks like now.

I went with a nano strain of phyto. Its good to only use one strain of a starter culture. The place I got it from was Reef Plantation as others recommended it here to me.

The first picture was on Thursday around 12. The second picture is today. (The culture next to it is my tisbe cultures. I just use one air pump and a control valve for all three cultures. The air is much slower to the pod cultures than the phyto.

girl had me build a 5x 4 shower with a 12inchx12inch rain head now she wants one of the body sprays/water pulse on the wall...It never ends...here lol...

I’m struggling to get good pictures, the ones I posted yesterday were with orange lense. Still to blue to see the colors. If anyone has some suggestions on how to get better pictures I would appreciate it.

Put the lens on your phone and then open the camera app already pointed at the tank. My IPhone camera does this weird thing if I open it and add the lens to take a photo of the tank it autocorrects back.

hmm questions...so do you like take some out of the main jar and seed a new jar like they do in Italy with bread yeast? Then use the main jar. Then the new jar becomes the main jar ?

So what I did which worked is I have four jars all one gallon. Two for Tisbe cultures in active use and one for phyto in active use and one for storage in my Fridge. When I want to reset my phyto I just take the one jar that is empty and pour some of the culture into that jar for use in my tanks. I then add newly mixed saltwater to the original jar and then add more F2 fertilizer to get it going again.

I keep the existing jar empty for harvesting of the cultures.

The reason it crashed the first time is I had a culture that was working but when I started it originally I did it with a mixed group of phyto which I heard is not the best way to do it. I bought a strain from Top shelf aquatics but it was likely over a month old and it crashed immediately. If I just used my original batch it would have probably been fine.

There is a couple of different strains of phyto but it seems Nannochloropsis is the best one for me as people say it is the easiest to cultivate and it eats waste and then can be skimmed out. Corals, Pods, eat it as well.

People do say you need to do a full reset of the culture every 3-4 months bleaching or peroxide cleaning the original container and then adding some of the original culture back to the original container with fresh saltwater. Its vital to use RODI water though when cleaning it as you want to prevent bacteria from getting in the culture. Some people fully reset the culture every time they harvest but that would make it way too difficult. I have heard of some people never resetting the culture with success as well.
