You don't NEED to run a skimmer, like most equipment on a reef tank, it is optional. You will hear people tell you that you NEED to run one... but... I don't have on my tank and it's thriving. Skimmers aren't picky on what they extract, so it takes out both good and bad. However, they are only about 30% efficient at doing that. One positive thing is you can skim dry and just use it mainly for aeration/pH boost.

They may play a role in bringing down nutrients, really depends on how wet you skim.

Last test was 2/15 and phosphates were .03 I don't know what nitrates where as I don't think I tested for them if I did I didn't write it down.

I don't think they make that drastic of a difference in lowering numbers, I like their benefit of gas exchange and potential to help with PH more than anything.

You can try to run it and see what effects it has on your phosphate and nitrate

Determine where you want your nitrates and phosphate to be ( different for everyone) and it is significantly higher skim.

It was just Friday that we were enjoying 78* weather, wearing short sleeves, and taking photos among the daffodils... Now, it's 28* and snowing. 🙃
