Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Did you know that marigolds repel mosquitoes?
I did not know that!
Great news though, because theyre already the size of Falcons down here and it's just March!

They are forbidden in my tank... Never had them and never will, I think I have a better chance keeping a emporer angel
That's the thing. If you're going to take a risk, do it with something beautiful that you really want!

I'm with you on this one!
There will never be another Peppermint Shrimp in my tank unless it is in a FOWLR with a Trigger. I may use them though in isolation from the tank, and corals, as I think they can take out some of the really big ones that the Berghia can't handle. When they have done their job, they are gone.

Hey man! How are all the corals doing? It's been a while
sorry for the late reply, I have been super busy.

Long story short, I have a laundry list of things to do before ....get ready for it....my wife has our 1st kid in September! My backyard is all ripped up getting a new patio and we found rot where the old patio was up against the house so I have been also tackling that woohoo!

The corals are good, I lost the clam, one day it was open, the next day it was devoured by shrimp... The cynarina was eaten by hermit crabs. That stunk!

All the torches are getting nice and big, for whatever reason torches grow like weeds in my tank.

I started to get one as well as another arrow crab but I have read they will also eat corals sometimes.
There seem to be some Peppermints that are model citizens but many go rogue and when they do they start with your prize LPS and quickly work through your tank while ignoring Aiptasia that are inconvenient.

yup got my button scoly, clam and cynarina...but also got all of the aiptasia

Anyone ever heard of Lamarcks Angelfish? Its apparently reef safe but grows to 9 inches. Some say 125 gallons is fine others say 150. They are very pretty and peaceful from what I have read but the 9 inches seems awful big for 125 gallon tank. What do you guys think?

The only success was when I would pull a rock and place it in a separate bucket, let it sit for a day or so and then remove all of the bristleworms/amphipods I can find then add three or four Berghia. When the rock is almost clean, return the rock to the display with the Berghia embedded in it somewhere, That rock stays pretty much clean for several weeks.

I don't know if the Wrasses are getting them or the Aiptasia are getting them or both. Plus while you don't see the bristleworms and amphipods without searching, they are there probably eating most if not all of the eggs.

The tank may actually be beyond what Berghia can fix. I can truthfully say I have never seen a tank as overrun with Aiptasia as my tank is right now. one insight came when I was watching our Berghia tank one day. We had a lot of Aiptasia in the tank as we had just reseeded it. There was one large Berghia on the opposite side of the tank from the others and the light was on so it wanted to hide. It tried to cross the tank but could not because it kept getting stung. Since then we are careful to not add too many Aiptasia to the Berghia tank at once. There are very few places in the display that are not completely covered by Aiptasia.

I think I need a multi-front campaign to start to win the Battle of the Lagoon:

  • Pull non-coraled rocks and let Peppermints have at it (this is to be as little as possible as it disrupts the fish pecking order for days at a time)
  • When done, remove rock from Peppermint Parlor, infuse with Berghia and return to tank
  • I've added a Kleini Butterflyfish that is pecking at the Aiptasia but not really with enough gusto so
  • May need to add Aiptasia-eating Filefish as well
  • I just got a fresh batch of F-Aiptasia, go after the biggest ones manually
  • Continue to harvest 50 or so Aiptasia per day for the Aiptasia farm from the sand
If that doesn't work or at least show continued progress, buy new tank, transfer fish and buy new rock, move existing tank to back yard, buy flamethrower, have a BBQ.
Man I hope it doesn't come to that Tom.
This was an interesting write up about your planned attack though. I got lucky on my first attempt with berghia. About a year later now, I'm seeing 2 or 3 small ones pop up. Unlike the last time I used berghia, I now have 4 wrasse.

It's always something in this hobby, I swear.

I might be wrong but it seems like I read they can sometimes eat corals.
Arrow Crabs, really almost all crabs, are occasionally model citizens but at heart an Arrow Crab is the Predator on steroids. It will eat anything it can catch, and corals don't move very fast, neither do sleeping fish.

Sorry about the corals, that is tough to hear man...

But CONGRATS on the baby!! Super happy for you guys. Best of luck on this new journey my friend. It's a wild but worthwhile ride for sure.

They are peaceful but no angel is reef safe, at best reef safe with caution. It is another of the more sedate-colored angels but pretty in its own right. That said they do get big enough that I don't think I would keep one in anything less than a 200.

Congrats on the little one on the way!!!

I can’t remember the size tank you have but even if it’s temporary I’ve heard great things about Australian stripeys for aptasia. Just a thought.

Sorry Mike, good news with your torches though ! Congratulations on your new baby!!!!!!!

Berghia worked great for me the first time, and I had a Yellow Wrasse at the time, and the tank stayed clear for over a year. The Yellow likes to sleep in until 10 or 11 am and goes to bed around 8 or 9 so plenty of time for the Berghia to hunker down. The Yellow is much larger today and the Pintail is up by 7 and doesn't go to bed until around 10.

The lifespan of a Berghia is supposed to be 10-12 months and it takes a couple of months before they are 'shipping-size' (1/4"-1/2").
