You need WiFi capability. Bluetooth only works over a short distance, depending on the BT version, less than 500 feet. You need a WiFi connection to a cloud-based app to get off-site notifications.

We have WiFi. Had to for their Popbloom lights that were already on the tank . Guess that is good
