Its a long one. my friend has multiple tanks (4) using the same sump. (freshwater) that he breeds and sells from. Well, the room they are in is not temp controlled as well as the rest of the house. He has been controlling the temp with Ziplock bags with ice. the sump area is not that easy for his wife to easily reach to change bags. So this idea has been put to use, 5 gallon bucket, 1/2 inch bulkhead, 1 inch (3/4 would do) bulk head, 1/2 inch tubing, 1 inch tubing, and a sicce syncra nano pump (since he had one). We plumbed a 5 gal. square bucket with the intake and drain at the same level to keep syphon out of the picture. We divided the bucket with a piece of plastic container lid roughly cut and holes drilled at the bottom for water to flow in, then down, then up out the drain. there is room for two bags of ice. The issue was, covering the instance of the small pump emptying the sump. so with the small pump just under the water surface at the sump, it cavitated. so with an unused dosing tube holder and some cut to shape plastic container lid mounted at sump water level. No cavitation and the threat of a flood from the pump will be minimal. My friends wife is home all the time so this would be minimal anyway . upside of the story for me is, i am going to use the same set up for a refugium, an as needed refugium.
