Great for you to use as a refugium but wouldn’t a cooler for tanks be a better way to keep the temp?

this was basically free, and the steady flow of cooler water did the trick. it took about 15 minuets for the water temp to start to drop. My buddy's wife is wheel chair bound, and this makes life so much easier for her. the heaters will kick in if the temp is going too low.

But how much are they ?

Fuel generators are less expensive but you generally can't bring them in the house to power specific items so you need to wire it into your house circuits whereas you can add battery systems where you need them. That or run extension cords around.

I have a UPS on our network equipment to keep internet and our internal equipment up during a power failure and the small Bluetti for the tank but I only run the return pump on it and if at night I'll plug in one of our table lamps. Since we set up the second tank I'll also plug its internal filter into the Bluetti during an outage. The Bluetti unit I have wouldn't power the fridge very long so I am considering another unit for the fridge.

It would take a very large generator, no matter whether solar, battery, battery/solar, or fuel to run our AC as we have a ten ton unit. I'm not really a fan of whole house as I think it is more practical and long-term less expensive to put the backup where it is needed for critical items. Rewiring a house to bunch the critical items is of course doable but generally pretty expensive post-build out.

The only thing I don't like about backups like most UPSs, Ecotech's or IceCap's battery systems is the use of lead-acid batteries. They only have a three year useful life whereas the LiFePO4 battery have a ten year life.

It would be perfect! It's not unlike many of the old school methods of bayou craft down here. Pirouxs, The Laffitte stiff, Native American dugout etc

Gator season opens in September, and it's a lottery. If you get drawn, you can pick up to 4 people to go with you. With you being from out of state, we'd almost certainly get drawn.

Id be very interested in hearing how yours is set up Tom. I was thinking about adding one in the new tank, but you don't see a lot of reefers doing this. There's just not much info out there

My sump, and @TheWB's are different from most AIO sumps, they are both 8" deep and full height (16" on mine 17" on Warren's) and full length 48". But our internal layouts are a little different. I have five chambers. The first houses a media basket for floss and chemical media when used (typically ChemiPure Blue) and the heater. The second chamber houses a skimmer (up to 8"x12" so full-sized, but I only use a Tunze 9004) and I also feed water from the second to the UV. The third is the refugium. I just have an open fuge where I grow whatever the tank wants to grow. I also dump the UV output and dosing into the third. It is 8"x12" and I have a Tunze ecochic Refugium light that comes on at 10:30pm and shuts off and 9:30am. The fourth chamber is empty but I dump ATO water into it. The fifth is just the return, the ATO sensor and the overflow/return pump failure sensor.

The only things in the fuge section other than algae and light are two tupperwares full of Two Little Fishes Refugite and a few small pieces of rock.

That sounds similar to how I want to set mine up. I may use that 4th chamber for some more real live rock rubble or something. . Im glad you mentioned the skimmer, because I want to add one and was looking at the tunze actually.

You missed it yesterday, I mentioned you. I was in the court room Friday as a show of support for my boss. I posted it gave me PTSD because the last time I was in the courtroom I had an orange jumpsuit on and matching bracelets thanks to you driving all the way to Ohio to bring me back to face charges. Yes I remembered that story you told a long time ago.i

Okay, now I am curious. I am sure there is a story here. You would be surprised to know how many folks I have counseled for making one bad decision. And that trip to Ohio was on my bucket list. Getting to fly commercial while armed and undercover. Here is a photo of my partner and I picking up an inmate in California. And one of myself leaving my hotel room. Sorry about the PTSD. It's a real thing.
