12g Fish Only Tank

Hey community,

so in our country it is not common to make a fish only reef So there are no information.

Ive readed a lot, and i have a place in my living room for a 12g. But i dont want another tank with daily dosing, testing, and be scared of pests that kill my high price corals.

So i decided to make a 12G Fish Only, everything i had here.

- tank
- nano heater
- hob filter
- freshwater LED
- rocks

I also have a tunze 9001 skimmer and many other parts if it is not working without ( i dont want to use it, because its huge and ugly in the tank )

Also have biopellets and so on...

My main question, if i put 1 Clownfish in the tank, and no corals, which Parameter are a sign to make a waterchange? I think Nitrat and Phosphate for example...

Are there other things important for fish only?

Thank you for your help

A new tank, reef or fish only, still goes through the uglies, so the first months (or first year) still requires maintenance and monitoring.

Fish only is pretty easy. The only real parameter to check is nitrates, which can hurt the fish if it gets too high, high being 80-100, so lots of wiggle room. Truth is you won't even need to test, just get into the habit of doing small weekly water changes

HOB filter is not needed, thats up to you.

I don't see a powerhead on your list, a powerhead is definately needed. Just rocks and flow and heat are all you need.

Even a skimmer is not really worth it, not on this size tank. There is no good skimmer for this size tank, and trust me, on a small tank like this, you want as less equipment as possible, Remember that without a skimmer, a powerhead becomes even more important to agitate the water surface.

Thank you, that confirmed my setup.

The Hob Filter makes a wide flow with 14x rate of the tank. And it is adjustable, i think i run floss to change every 3 days, because i like the clear water.

I have over 10 powerheads here, if that is not enough.

So it is is:
Rock
Flow
Heater
Hob

And weekly WC to keep Nitrates down.

Hey i have a question.

I have Installed a good freshwater LED because I like the 6500k look.

But my question is, is a LED with lower Power / Lumen / Par are better in terms of algae in a FOWLR?

I mean when I install a high end reef LED, the power is not consumed by corals, so it must grow algae, or i am thinking in the wrong way?

Its only thinking, im happy with my 10 Watts Led.

Current Setup:
Rocks from another reef tank I have ( cleaned )
2x 40 Gallon per hour filter for a round flow
Heater
Water ( ATI Natural Saltwater )
Light is an 1800 Lumen 18 Watt 10K Light

So yesterday I got a Clown and a Camel Shrimp for free. Long story, but not nice.

I dose daily a bacterica product, which is in the freezer.

Different things Ive ordered, they come the next days:
- Live Sand
- Live Rock , smaller pieces
- High Quality Fake Corals

Hope everything is understandable, my English is not the best
