Hi all,

Hoping to get some help identifying the algae I have in my tank. I know it’s likely part of the ugliest for a new tank, but my neighbor took care of feeding while I was gone and nitrates were 1.9 when I got back, which is lower than usual. I think I have diatoms, some sort of hair algae, then green of some kind. Looking for confirmation it’s not something I need to worry about. Here are pics and params for reference.

Params on 1/6
Temp: 77
Salinity: 1.026
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 1.9
Phosphate .02
Ph: 8.4
Alk: 8.4

Looks like typical diatoms. You are 2 months in, this is expected. Welcome to the ugly stage. If it were me, I would just ride it out, take a toothbrush clean the rock off, clean the sand, do a water change and siphon it out (weekly or however frequently you do water changes). Get some clean up crew and continue to clean / do your water changes and it will go away on its own over time. Just my 2 cents based on my experience. Also a great time to start populating your tank with copepods.

What’s the algae at the bottom that looks kind of like grass?

I have a 4.5 month tank and my green hair turned into brown algae all over sand and rock. Water change every 2 weeks now and bought CUC and last night added trigger pods to eat it. The trigger pods. Also use Dinkins live phytoplankton to feed the pods. I hope just one more month to get over the ugly stage mountain.

Looks like some hair algae. Could be from the uglies, could be from a little overfeeding, maybe. How big is the tank and how many fish do you have? You feeding frozen or pellets? What's the lights on the tank and duration of photoperiod?

60 gallon DT with 20 gal sump. 2 chromis and a juvenile yellow tang. I feed twice a day TDO pellets and extreme marine herbivore pellets. A pinch in the morning and a pinch in the evening
