You do not need a controller, you will plug you laptop from USB to MicroUSB into each light and setup in their free online software, or you can buy a ReefLink and control without needing the USB Micro cable. (if you use the ReefLink you can control from the app on your cellphone) software is free called EcoSmart Live

I run a pair of these over my Red Sea Reefer 250 and they are amazing to say the least. You won't go wrong with them. (I do not know the seller, just trying to answer your question)
