This is sort of a follow up from my last post, but I’m finalizing the fish in there. As the title states, I’m trying to avoid clowns for the time being unless I change my mind.

This is my thoughts for now:

-Pair of purple firefish
-Royal Gramma
-(?) Blue Damsel
-YWG + pistol shrimp

Is this overstocking? What should I change? Thank you all in advance!

Hey @Stef777!

So for a 20g, that's pushing the stocking a bit. Both puple firefish and royal grammas are territorial and in a 20g they might get aggresive with each other. The blue damsel may cause issues as well because they need more space and can become quite aggresive as they mature.

Here's what I recommend:

Option 1:
- Pair of purple firefish
- YWG + pistol shrimp combo

Option 2:
- Royal Gramma
- YWG + pistol shrimp combo

The YWG + pistol shrimp combo is a really good choice for smaller tanks - a ton of personality without a large bioload.

Whatever you choose though, make sure you add the fish slowly (maybe once every few weeks) and watch for aggression issues.

Happy Reefing!

I think you should take the damsel off the list, the tank is too small for a damsel to share. Don't add the RG with the firefish, the colours are too similar and may have issue's.

I think your idea of firefish pair and goby/shrimp pair will be a good tank, maybe room for another peaceful fish like tail spot blenny or clown gobies.

I would go with some Trimma gobies, a Blenny (great at cleaning, even peck at hair algae), and....

a pair of clowns :D

Sorry cant help it I just love em.

Damsel might be a handful in this size tank. If you get one, add it last and I would personally lean towards Azure or Pavo.
