220 Aquarium Rebuild

I didn't paint my last one and regretted it so I made sure to paint it this time around.

So thinking about some aspects of my setup last night and I have a dilemma. I really want to make one of my cabinets a control box housing my apex and everything else however my tank is on my main floor and my sump is in my basement. Do they make any sort of extension for for the apex probes so I can have the apex upstairs but the probes in the sump in my basement?

The PM1 and PM2 have ports for various probes, but there are other ways to solve most of the complications. Why do you want the Apex upstairs? It's easy enough to keep the brain where you want the probes and have a display plugged into an Aquabus port wherever you want it. You've got to run a cable between them no matter what anyway, so what the difference between running the Aquabus cable and running an Aquabus and an Ethernet cables?

Having the controller on my main floor is all about esthetics. I like how they look so i want to be able to show it off with the display tank. I am going to have a nice area just to the right of the tank to house alot of my controllers and I plan to add a touch screen display as well.

I have done some research and I have found some extensions I think that will work for the probes..

I was able to get a little bit of work in tonight on the stand most of the trimming is done and nail holes and imperfections are filled.

Hopefully tomorrow night is a light sanding then first coat of paint on the trim..

I has some time last night and was able to get the sanding done and the first coat of paint on. All that's left to do it build the doors which I am hoping to do on Sunday. Im really excited with how it has come out so far.

Once the doors are done the next step is to build the canopy. I have a few ideas in mind but wanted to see what other people have for canopies for some inspiration... i am really struggling with how I want it to open. Do I want just the front to open on a hinge or do I want it to open upwards so it picks up the front and some of the top for better access.

Show me what you have... ill take picture or just imput... whatever you go for me :)

Its been a little bit since I have updated my build but the stand is in my house and the tank is sitting on it. Now to get it plummed so I can get it filled and get my fish and coral back in the tank. Once I dont that I will build the doors, side cabinet and canopy.

Things have been crazy at work lately so haven't had alot of time to get work done on the stand but I did get the tank setup and everyone back in the tank safe and sound.

Hoping to have some time over the long weekend to get some additional work done on the canopy and side cabinet.

I was able to get a little more work done over the weekend. I have all the frame work in place and doors built. I just need to do some sanding and painting and then they will be ready to go.

Im feeling good about how its coming out. Getting excited for the next phase which is setting up all the electronics and switches...

So I have read these types of threads for years and always loved them, so figured if im doing a rebuild on my 220 I should bring everyone along for my journey. Please excuse my writing I am far from an English major! :)

Currently I'm running a 220 gallon aquarium that I picked up used about 4 years ago on Craigslist. The tank has some imperfections but at the time I got a steal on it and it was the best way for me to get into a larger aquarium without breaking the bank. (Well atleast for aquarium standards ... haha)

I've been wanting to get a new aquarium but I had a well established tank and never wanted to take the risk of losing my fish or corals as a result of making a large change like this. Unfortunately around the time "covid" hit i added some new fish to my tank which were not a good fit and led to stress and other issues that basically wiped out my tank minus a couple fish. As alot of you know all to well how it feels and it was a gut wrenching time but its now put me in a place were I am going to be able rebuild it from the ground up with minimal worry. I have purchased a new tank and it should arrive in the next week or so. I'm going to build a custom stand that goes with the style of my house and not just a cheep stand that normally comes with them that well lets face it, they aren't usually the best looking things. (No offense if you have one :) )

I'm also going to make some changes to the sump and equipment along the way. I am not one to be a planner so I'm just going to role with it and plan and figure it out as I go. Don't get me wrong I have a good idea of what I want just don't have it down on paper. So stay tuned and I look forward to seeing what everyone thinks along the way...

Here's a picture of my current reef aquarium.

I have a 220 as well, what kind of lights are you running and how far above the top of the aquarium are you lights?
