24k Leptoseris Placement

I currently have a 24k Leptoseris Coral sitting in the shadow at the bottom of the tank because it’s new, but i’m not sure if it’s in the best spot. I heard that they like shade but is there a better spot for it to grow? Thanks!

Low light and on some rockwork was what I did it grew really well for me

Shade is good for 24K. They're a lower light variety and too much light bleaches them. They don't necessarily need shade but lower half of the tank would be ideal. You may be able to slowly bring it up to a higher par, but definitely start it low and slowly raise it if you do.

I don’t have a 24k but I do have golden tiger and Jack o lantern. I mounted to my overflow wall up high and they are doing great

I've seen 24k way up high doing great and I've seen others at about half way down the rockwork bleach. Depends on how they were "raised" I would imagine.

My 2 lepto's (jack o lantern and mr freeze) are on the top of rocks under MH light but off to the sides so no directly under the light. I wouldn't suggest to leave it in the shade though

Let it acclimate to your tank. Then move it up slowly to the shady spot you want it to live permanently. If you’re patient getting it to the desired spot and it likes it there, you will have great growth. Moving things too often and too fast doesn’t give the coral a chance to adapt and let you know if it’s really happy or unhappy.

You made a smart choice to grow it on a disk. I made the mistake of growing it on rock. Now it’s spreading everywhere. I covered my jack-o’-lantern with a rock arch so it’s getting like basically no PAR and it’s still spreading!

I've seen 24k way up high doing great and I've seen others at about half way down the rockwork bleach. Depends on how they were "raised" I would imagine.

Second that. I mounted a frag of it about midway up. Ive never seen a coral bleach that fast. I put it back in a low light corner and it recovered almost as quickly.

Mine is in about 200 par and is my largest colony. But lighting goes with flow. I have high flow with the higher lighting. I agree with slowly acclimating it if you want to move it up.

Hey @Reefer Matt It never gets old seeing that gorgeous tank! I used to watch you on YouTube before I even had a tank.
How long did it take to reach that size? Do you find it to be aggressive up on the rockwork with the other corals?

Thanks! This colony is five years old. It was a later addition to the tank. Leptoseris is one of the more aggressive sps coral. I have observed it sting back and overgrow montipora and pavona. For acropora, it tries to shade them from above. But the growth hasn’t been unmanageable for me. But yeah, with encrusters, they kinda have their own battles after a few years. Luckily this coral is very bright and beautiful.

For acropora, it tries to shade them from above. But the growth hasn’t been unmanageable for me. But yeah, with encrusters, they kinda have their own battles after a few years. Luckily this coral is very bright and beautiful.

That’s why mines on the overflow. It can encrust that all it wants, no complaints from me. Brings some much needed color up high and in a spot I can’t normally place corals

Mine was same way, just covered in coralline and it’s not bright or eye catching. The lepto changed the look entirely

I cut the stems off the plugs and superglued them right on the overflow. They encrusted over and are covering it nicely
