2nd velvet outbreak in a year. Wiped out tank. Running a uv after the first mishap and somehow I still managed to get unlucky again.Don’t want to get rid of my tank but I’m feeling a bit discouraged because it feels like all my hard work and money is just going down the drain.

Gotta QT everything (fish, frags, live rock CUC) or it’s gonna keep happening, it’s not unlucky it is going to happen if you don’t QT/treat.

Ah. Dips don’t prevent diseases.

I recommend buying from Dr. Reef. He sells fully QT fish at great prices. You’ll save a lot from the QT setup and learning curve. He also stands by his fish with a good guarantee.

Yes. You could set it up and qt yourself effectively and save a lot instead of relying on a seller to do it for you.They are just going to charge you double.Just have to be patient in the process.

How did you diagnose it as velvet which basically has no symptoms except rapid breathing?

Did you fallow your tank after the first event for 60 days?

They did have the heavy breathing and they were full of white dots (way more than you can count). Yes I actually did 75 days

Yeah Ive been buying my last couple fish from Dr. Reef just to make it easier on myself. However, I do have an invert/coral qt set up. Tomonts (virus cysts) can live on frag plug surfaces, snail shells etc so they need to be quarantined in a fishless system for 45 days at 80.6 degrees F. This is the same reason the tank needs to be fallow after an outbreak, have to wait for all the tomonts to hatch and die off when they dont find any fish.

I had to go fallow three (3) times in the same tank. Granted, it was many years ago and I have learned a tremendous amount since-- and I QT my fish now. But hang in there; don't give up.
