Hello friends, I have a 2 year old Duncan stays closed up in my main tank. When I place him in a quarantine tank he opens up. All other corals and fish are fine. Water is fine. I have a 46 gallon bowfront with 2 hangon back overflow to a 30 gallon sump, 5 gallon hang on fuge on the sump, skimmer in sump and lights for fuge I run when main lights are off. Is it being poisoned by other corals when they die from some corals growing over them? Should I split my Duncan? The 3rd photo is 2 years ago. Lighting by 2 Kessil's A360W Tuna Blue. The last 2 photos just taken of my Reef Tank. Been into salt for 2 years and fresh for 40. Looking forward to comments and ideas/suggestions. Also I notice a sheen of oil on the surface and I have been skimming one gallon every day for the past 5 weeks. Thanks. Anthony

Moderate light and water flow and salinity which could be an issue for you.... range 1.024-1.026.
Ph range 8.0-8.3

Salinity 1.025, ph 8.4, too much light and flow sounds right. I have 3 powerheads for flow low speed pulses, and my return pump is running 30% power. I will place him lower in the tank, less light and flow. Thanks.

Might be worth an ICP test?
Did that, sulfur is a little high. Was doing 5 gallon water change per week and started skimming 1 gallon surface water daily for the oil slick. I feed 3 cubes daily for fish. Thanks.

Duncans are just not hardy coral. They don't do well once they have started doing what yours is doing. Mine did the same thing. Come to find out. CORAL WARFARE was the issue. These corals are super sensitive to flow and par. Good luck my friend. I would run more carbon. Do a weekly 5-10% water change's till it comes back out. But on the other hand Never Never Never change your tank for the sake of 1 coral regardless of age.

Thanks. I do 5 gallons per week. I will start using more carbon, waiting for Chemie Pure to arrive. Had a feeling about CORAL WARFARE, I have zoanthids that is being overgrown by what I think is Leather, I moved it to the left side of the tank. I will never change what I am doing because of one coral not surviving, over the past 2 years I seen a few whither and die but the majority of corals are growing. My Duncan grew well for 2 years until I installed the Kessils and maybe running them to bright. I will lower the lighting and see what happens.

What's next to the Duncans. Is there anything that is annoying them. What's you nutrients po4 and no3.
Nothing touching, but some zoanthids maybe dying from other corals growing over them making the water toxic for duncans. no3 is like 0.5, phosphate 0.12, ULR Phosphorus 72 (forget what that translates to). Just started 5 gallon water change per day for maybe a week or 2.

Phosphates are good. I wonder about nitrates being a little low.
If the zoas are dying are you running carbon

That maybe it. How fast did you raise the lights.

Well I did several small water changes and added more carbon and moved Duncan to a lower level and is coming out of his shell. Thanks to all your comments/suggestions. Here are a few pics of my MiniReef. 46 gallon bowfront was used for fresh water for a few years and upgraded to 75. Had the itch to try salt water and used the 46 to start my reef 2 years ago. Have a 30 gallon sump for extra water volume and 5 gallon fuge. Most corals are growing fast, some very slow. Have a Yellow Tang I rescued from Petco over a year ago with tattered fins and very skinny, they gave me a big discount and I took him home. Look at him now, king of the tank. I also have 2 clownfish living in I think a Kenya tree I had for 2 years. 2 black and white Damsels, a filefish and a Flamehawk. Many crabs and a few snails, some aiptasia but not getting out of hand. What do you all think?
