Couple of quick pics:

The stock arm that comes with the AI nano looks TERRIBLE on this tank, so I had to get creative.

Can't figure out how this thing works. Could you explain please?

I am not sure which piece you are talking about, the JBJ surface skimmer / or media basket. I will address both. :)

JBJ Modular Surface Skimmer

This was originally designed to be used with the JBJ Nanocube. The intake screen on the filter compartment does a horrible job of skimming the surface and removing that protien film that develops on the surface of the water due to the intake pulling in too much water from below the surface. It is just a small plastic overflow box that was made to go over the intake screen to improve the performance and improve overall water quality.

It blocks off that lower portion of the intake, and pulls only from the surface of the water , same purpose as the overflow boxes found on larger reef tanks.

inTank Media Basket

from their website

The Fluval Spec Media Basket is a superior upgrade to what is included stock with the Spec series of aquariums. Features three shelves to maximize media options and space. Includes a removable door for easy maintenance and to make the media basket four sided while in use. This forces water through media instead of around it. The package includes an adjustable surface skimmer to solve the stock design issues. This will reduce the surface scum that can accumulate over time.

inTank recommends closing off small hole in chamber one. The basket will butt up against it but some water will still enter. A dab of silicone will do, make sure nothing extend into chamber as this will obstruct the Media Basket.

  • Installs in chamber one under intake grate
  • 4 sided to force water through media
  • Includes adjustable surface skimmer
  • Made from high quality acrylic
  • Laser cut to exact dimensions and tolerances
  • Fits Fluval Spec, Spec III, and Spec V model aquariums
  • 8-3/4" Tall
  • 9" Tall with Handle
  • 4-1/8" Wide
  • 1-15/16" Deep

Hope that helps.

Wow, thanks :)

So, this skimmer just mix the firm into the water (no direct nutrients export). That makes sense now, thank you!

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
