because all that slime algae is consuming the nutrients as they are produced. Also that may not be a zero on the ammonia test.

How old is the tank? Did it finish cycling?

You have ammonia in your tank, which could be detrimental to your fishes. FWIW I always get 0 NO3 with my API test kit, but my Selifert kit would constantly show 5 ~ 7ppm. For that I have little faith on API NO3 testing. But you have lot of slime algae, which is why you probably don't see any NO3.

How do I fix this problem? Also, how do I keep it from happening again?

The tank has been up a little over a month and a half now. I used api quick start. And I do water changes every 2 weeks. And I replace the Filter car.. every month.

Get a different test kit like Red Sea. I suspect you are getting inaccurate readings.
