Hey everyone. Looking to set up a 40 gallon breeder. Wife has a spare one I was gonna use. But it’s a marineland 40 that cannot be drilled. What’s the best filter to use on it besides a sump system. Thanks in advance

Are you sure your tank can't be drilled? Any tank pane that's not made of tempered glass can be drilled, and drilling tanks is A LOT easier than many people think. There's a very simple test to determine if you have tempered glass:

If your tank is tempered glass or you just don't want to drill it, there are some over the rim overflows that many reefers here swear by, that may her an option for you (to allow you to have a sump). Other members here will not trust an over the rim overflow.

You can absolutely run your tank with all Hang On Back (HOB) gear, from HOB filters like the Fluval AquaClears (my favorite) to the popular SeaChem Tidal, as well as HOB protein skimmers and refugiums, if they are needed.

Flow is arguably more important than filtration, so good flow will go a long way here.

I hope that helps and good luck!
