I currently am setting up a 40 gallon saltwater tank fish only or reef haven't decided or bought the lighting yet, but i have a question; Will i need a Skimmer for a tank that small also would i then also need a SUMP for such a small tank. Currently mind you i have 2 fluval aqua-clear 50-60s that i will be running on it and they are putting me at 400gph so roughly 10 turns an hour will that be enough or will i need to purchase or build a SUMP and skimmer?

NEED? Maybe not. SHOULD? I definitely do. I have a 40 breeder and a 20 gallon long sump with a bubble magus 3.5 skimmer. I have both fish and coral. Not only will a sump provide more water to help prevent parameter fluctuation, it also adds a space to put unsightly things like heaters, dosers, skimmers, etc. I also have a minimalistic rockscape so it allows space to store more rock for filtration.

I just set up a 40 L and have a 30 gal sump on it. I'm looking for a skimmer for my tank. I always go biggest I can for my sumps. More flow over rocks, substrate, refugium and so on. I find it keeps the smaller tanks more stable. Ive been looking into SCA 301 skimmer for my sump.
