Here is a design I'm working on for a buddy for a 40B. I'm posting it here for some direction and thoughts on the layout. All comments and ideas are appreciated and welcome.

Got any room for a couple gallons worth of fresh water for an ATO?

Could do something along these lines.

OR better yet make the ATO the full width of the aquarium.

At least for comparison in size and function, check out the Tunze Comline® Reefpack 250 ($214).

In terms of taking up real estate in the tank, these are definitely the way to go. They are tiny PLUS they hide the heater and ATO sensors.

But I understand how that kills the DIY and is probably in a different budget level...

Indeed. I have a maxijet 1200 as my RP an Avast CS1 skimmer. So my "sump" needs to hold that and a heater that way my tank and display fuge look clean.

I think I like the one with the bigger display fuge (cuz good looking fuges are awesome!) and you can still see the level of the ATO through the fuge.
