Just set up a tank for my son. I plan to do a mixed reef for him. Running a 40g Recife cube, so far I’ve got 2 snowflake clowns, 3 damsels but I’m trying to figure out what would be an eye catching centerpiece fish. Something a bit larger than the clowns. I’m so used to larger tanks, the smaller one has me stumped with the fish list! Would love to hear some input!

What kind of damsels do you have? Im thinking you wont be able to add any other fish with them in there in that space

Oof those are pretty mean honestly
If I need to remove them, I most certainly will. I just need to figure out which fish to get for this kids tank. I love flame angels, but those things are so hit and miss with corals.

And I wouldnt put a flame in this tank but thats my opinion. Blennies (midas is my favorite) are super cool and have great personalities! Maybe look into one of them? Also a sixline wrasse is beautiful, those can be mean as heck so it would be able to go with the damsels. Cardinal fish are super cool too with how they float in the water! A cherub angel is the smallest dwarf and would probably be fine in this tank, they are super cute! Royal grammas are pretty too.

If you can find one of these you get the looks of a dwarf angel but it’s a damsel and will work in a 40g tank. Gets to be about 3.5” long.
Starki Damsel. Not my picture.

What are the dimensions of the tank? These will account for a lot of what you can/can’t have.

a 40 gallon is still a nano tank, I would consider a basslet of some kind as the showpiece.

Frankly with 2 clowns and 3 damsels, I would be afraid for any new fish added to that tank, I wish you the best but IME it won't go well.
