My 40g is 3 months old with 2 clowns and a diamond goby. I was able to get two cheap frags of zoas and gsp so i placed those in my tank and they’ve been doing great! My question is with my current bioload, am i able to put more soft coral in without a protein skimmer

current set up
Fluval 407 with polyfiber and the rest of trays filled woth biomedia
In tank chaeto

You do not need a skimmer. You will be fine with routine water changes.

Do you have pictures? I'm always a sucker for a softie tank.

But to answer your question, you'll be just fine without a skimmer, especially with that bio load. Maybe once you get above 5 fish (assuming they're all roughly the same size) you'll want to rethink your filtration but you're just fine adding coral as is.

You'll be just fine, although it helps to run some quality activated carbon in softie systems. Also yes pictures please :)

You can add however as your load increases, you will want to apply nutrient export via skimmer but as mentioned, with water changes and water monitoring, you can get by without a skimmer
