40W IceCap In-Sump UV Sterilizer

I recently purchased a 40W IceCap In-Sump UV sterilizer and I’m hoping to get some clarification on the documentation and sizing guidance.

According to the instructions for the 40W model:

1. It is rated for a maximum 400-gallon (marine) system volume.

2. The Efficiency and Flow Rate table recommends:

940 gph for bacteria and algae control

300 gph for parasite control

An aquarium size of 300 gallons

3. It states that the “sweet spot for reducing bacteria and algae using a UV system is to have the water flow through at a rate of 3 to 4.5 times the total tank volume every hour.”

4. The unit includes an EVO 2000 feed pump, which is rated at 528 gph @ 0 head.

Where I’m confused:

If the included EVO 2000 feed pump is only rated for 528 gph at 0 head, how is the recommended 940 gph for bacteria and algae control supposed to be achieved?

Using the “3 to 4.5 times tank volume per hour” guideline and the included pump’s ~528 gph rating, the “sweet spot” would seem to correspond to roughly a 117–176 gallon system, which is significantly smaller than the 300–400 gallon sizing referenced elsewhere in the documentation.

I may be missing something, so I’d really appreciate clarification from IceCap or feedback from anyone successfully running this exact 40W In-Sump unit.

can you help me out with clarifying the measurements? trying to see if it will in my sump chamber with my skimmer. it says that the dinners are
  • LxWxH: 5.4 x 5.1 x 24in
is the foot print at the base smaller than this? where woukd it be 5.4”? would that be the distance across the top plus how the output tube extends? what about the 5.1”?

i think it’s gonna be tight for-me. i thought it would be ok but i also have to contend with the skimmer cup diameter. i have a trigger sump and it also has a lip across the top so i can’t go all the way to the sump walls.

Hi. I bought one also. I love the drop in design, plug and play, but the instruction is very vague. I’ve experienced this in the past with Icecap. My question for anyone is how does one adjust the flow rate? Is it the blue knob on the top? “Left is slow right is fast.” There aren’t any numbers anywhere that would guide the proper gph for whatever purpose one is eradicating.

i assume it’s the knob. i wonder how much it will cut the flow? the flow ratings for that 2000 pump don’t seem to match the flow requirements for parasite control. i’m guessing you can see at the bottom of the output tube an opening which closes as you turn the know. sort of like the knobs on skimmers to adjust the water level in them.

icecap support do respond to emails but when i asked about the flow they pretty much just echoed the numbers on the web site.

just got the uv and setting it up. if i turn the valve to as low as possible with out shutting off completely, water is dripping out between the two plates that connected with the screws. i want the flow low for long contact time to treat parasites. it doesn’t seem that there isnt much of a big range if i have the valve open all the way vs closing without water dripping on the outside is there a problem?

if its dripping on the outside, is it possible that water could also be getting into the quartz sleeve?
