About a month ago I picked up a used setup for $300 which isn’t a bad deal for a 92g Oceanic RR tank, stank, sump and skimmer (also came with light that I replaced). However now that the excitement of having a corner tank in my family room has worn off I have a lot of work to do. The tank has a fair amount of scratches but that’s another story and dozens of hours polishing ahead (my wife has already offered the “I told you so”) but here I am.

It appears the stand was taken apart for some reason and not put together properly. I’ve taken it down to the 2x6’s and am rebuilding it. My question is support - it had the 2x6’s with 1x6’’s, 1x4’s and 1x2’s. I’m replacing the 1x6’s with new boards (one was nearly completely bored through for plumbing), going to 1x4’s in the front and adding a pair of 2x4’s in the front for additional support.

My thought is the 2x6’s in the rear and 2x4’s in the front could technically hold the tank so it should be fine. The boards are supporting the weight and there are no screws from a shearing standpoint.

Thoughts?
Eric

Taken a while but I have some time off to get the stand finished this weekend.

Moving to next strep of surface prep, priming and painting the wood black. This isn't a common stand as it's a 92g Oceanic corner tank, but there are two pieces of ABS that cover the front of the stand following the curve and a smoked glass door. All needs reconditioned but once the stand is painted and in the house I can start parking in the garage again.

Support should be sufficient -
Pair of 2x8s in the back corner
2x4 on either side - needed to be closer to the front as space is tight and I have a sump
1x6's on either corner (also where the ABS secures)
1x4s either side of the front opening
2x4's in the front between the opening and the side 1x6's

Everything is glued and I reused all the right angle brackets, boards are screwed from the top and bottom through the top and bottom panels, 1x4's on either side connecting the 2x6s, side 2x4s and corner 1x6s together (added these for lateral strength).

Curious as to whether I need additional support. I know the vertical boards can more than support a 90g tank but I’m concerned with the stand “twisting”. I have a 1x4 connecting the front 1x4s to the 2x8s in the rear - do I need something between the corner 1x4 and the 2x4 in the front? There is a piece of ABS that finishes the front and will add some support - don’t know if I’m being paranoid?

If I haven’t explained this correctly and you’re confused- just ask .

Thanks!
Eric
