A few UV Sterilizer questions

I spent a lot of time reading about these, thinking about one to control ich that may be in my tank. I concluded it probably wouldn't be helpful and would be expensive to buy the proper size and power it. Not worth the $$$. Do it right and quarantine your fish.

I use mine on my QT. It helps like crazy. It also keeps my display tanks' water crystal clear.

Everyone has their own way of doing things, i chose the other route, got an oversized UV (40 watt Pentair for 100 gallon), started supplementing selcon with all my food, nori daily for my tangs and made my own food using clams, mussels, fish eggs, fish, squid etc......havent had a fish die of disease since. Maybe ive been lucky but its working so far.

I want it mostly for preventing cyano outbreaks. Any potential help with pathogens is a great added bonus. :-)

Uv doesn’t prevent cyano, low nutrients cause cyano, as long as you have nutrients and flow you won’t have cyano.

This hobby is not only for the rich. When I was 8 or 9 I had a saltwater 29G with clowns, damsils, angel, box puffer, some corals and a green carpet...I had a canister filter running a reverse overflow, a HOB skimmer run by a power head and whisper air pump...uses 2 wood airstones for the "bubble plate" and a 4 ft lowes shop light hanging from my ceiling with 2 mail order 4 ft tubes. This tank ran for like 6 years until a week long power outage took it out. But yes a large really nice tank could cost more than a nice used car.

Agreed, just gotta know where you can save money and be safe. Not everyone can afford an Apex or an auto water change system or a Trident. But not everyone needs to either.

Bringing this thread back as I'm finally ready to buy one (was hoping to find a used one, but no luck so far). FylPenFly, have you used the American Aquarium Products Sterilizer? It does look like a good option and more reasonably priced than others ($190 shipped). And replacement bulbs are a lot more reasonable too.

Would their 25 Watt one be enough for my 120g tank though? They claim it's good for a 180 gallon aquarium. Their higher wattage ones it looks like are designed more for ponds. Just curious if others have used this brand? Thanks,
