Ok so here’s it goes. I need a little help identifying what’s happening to this tang. I just got the tang from the Lfs, was also told it was a bristle tooth tang, I don’t think that’s what I have here. Anyways I temp acclimated and watched him for a bit as he was acclimating and noticed his coloring was super pale and really lacking a healthy look. I put the tang thru a fw dip and put him into the qt tank. Shortly after going into qt I noticed a bunch of white mucus coming off and resembled peeling skin kinda plus the fish had little white specks in it. I thought possibly brook so I removed the fish into another bucket to dose 90 mins of ruby reef rally. After breaking down the qt tank the fish went into originally I had to go and create an emergency qt tank while I sanitized the original qt tank. I used water from my dt to set up the emergency qt tank. The tang is eating readily as I’ve already fed it both PE mysis and SA hatchery diet. However he is pacing the tank and with his color blotchyness I am concerned it could be an early sign of velvet :/. Here are pictures of the tang in the emergency set up qt tank. He has no spots, that’s just the flashlight I have pointing into the water reflecting off stuff.

I guess my concern is that both of these, brook and velvet, can be very aggressive so I took precautions with a fw dip and then a RRRally bath and put into clean water in a new qt tank. However if it is suspected to be velvet should I not try to start copper immediately? I guess best thing I can do is wait for the fish to show more signs of possible velvet. Or see if the dip and bath did the trick.

You can do copper but you're not sure if it's velvet.
I don't see any signs of it other than the stress color.
Give him the night to calm down a bit and see in the morning how he interacts.

Ok, that’s exactly what I will do. However that brings up the stress colors for me, considering it looks nothing like a bristle tooth tango me, I’m not really sure what the color should be like on this tang. Thanks a lot diesel for the quick replies.

Yea luckyPhil I agree with what you are saying it’s hard show detail with the glass dirty, like I was explaining above it was really more of an emergency qt tank so the glass really isn’t of pristine cleanliness. I’ll clean up the glass and take a good one tomorrow for everyone to see. Thanks for any help Phil:)

If you suspect velvet, start copper. Many times it's too late by the time you know for sure... some key velvet symptoms are swimming directly into flow, loss of color/appetite, hiding/sensitivity to light, a whitish sheen or coating, and/or numerous small white spots...too many to count.

I can't see anything in the pictures provided, a clearer picture would be helpful. You said it's eating though? It looks sort of thin/pinched, any white stringy poop?

Ok so an update and some better pictures. So the tang is eating everything and anything I put in there. The coat is still off, his color did improve significantly but he kinda looks like he got sunburned and and now has a patchiness to him. I would somewhat say he looks like he does have somewhat of a whitish sheen. Here are some more pictures. If they aren’t clear enough I can take some more. Let me know your thoughts.

Stress if you ask me.
How long you dipped him in freshwater?
Was the temp and Ph the same as the water he came from?

I did the fw did for 4 mins and the temp was exactly the same, however for ph I use rodi and will just squirt a lil dt water in just to raise the ph a little bit before putting him in.
Today I gave the tang another rally bath and had some small fluke pop off. I decided to start with prazi and continue to monitor closely for anything else. When giving him the bath I was able to look at him closely and here is the picture. It was super hard to say if he was dirty looking Or if it was just stress, seeing that the white band on his tail is kinda faded and now as I look at him it’s solid white. So let me have it, what do you think?

Ok so im pretty sure this is a ring tail tang. But onto some new pictures. He’s gain a bunch of weight, eating regularly and actively eating Nori and has been slowly showing a healthier color. However I’ve noticed some serious problems with his tail besides it disappearing it also has a small red sore on it :/ plus his skin still has a blothchiness to it. I picked up some metroplex to put into his food. But what should be my next step?
