​ The GHL Mitras LX8 series is officially here, and it is shaping up to be a viable option for high-end aquarium lighting. When speaking with GHL’s CEO, Matthias Gross I couldn’t help but get excited over his enthusiasm for the product. He’s recently returned from the factory, where he has been putting these units through rigorous testing, and the performance metrics are better than he had expected. It’s always a good sign when product testing exceeds expectations! GHL Mitras LX8: The Highlights Built to be a powerhouse in a compact form factor, the LX8 is rated at 250W. According to GHL’s testing, the fixture has been pushed well beyond its rated limits without issue.

​ Key Specifications: Power: 250W fixture + dedicated moonlight channel. LED Count: 132 high-power LEDs + 3 moonlight LEDs. Control: 12-channel control system for precise spectral adjustment. Spread: Up to a 125cm (49”) diameter spread for LPS-dominated systems (PAR level of 100 µmol/m²/s) and 95cm (37”) diameter spread for SPS-dominant reefs (PAR level of 200 µmol/m²/s). GHL is well known for its quality, so while I haven’t handled this fixture in person, I’m confident it’ll be a well built piece of equipment based on their reputation alone. Mathias told me the LEDs are run at 50% of their rated current. While this could result in lower temperatures and a longer lifespan, I can’t help but think about what performance is being untapped? If I was a tinkerer, I’d love to “overdrive” the fixture and see what it’s truly capable of! Or, is this a subtle hint that we may see a higher output when the units finally ship?

I just recently got into the GHL ecosystem and it seems like all their hardware is very high quality! Unfortunately it also seems like all the lights they make are much too big and powerful for any of the tanks my wife and I have. Maybe someday lol

The spectrum on these looks good. But outside of the preorder deal, 1200 euros, man that’s steep.

I got the Orphek Natura Icons that are plenty for me. Yes I know Chinese, but they world well and at 150 watts I get crazy par to the bottom of the tank at 15” off the water. Only need 4 of them. These lights I would probably need 5 for my 96x30.

Non the less they look like good lights. Will keep an eye out when they come out to see what they put out.

Yes, you're right — the LX8 isn't a very cheap high-power aquarium LED compared with some other solutions. But competing on price was honestly never our first goal. We simply wanted to build the best possible product with the most benefit for the user.

Consider that it's not just the brutal 250 W of power — which can of course be turned down when it's more than your tank needs. The main point is the complete, wide spectrum, made possible by 12 independent LED channels, with accents placed exactly where you want them. On top of that, we use reflectors instead of other secondary optics: this gives the highest optical efficiency, great color mixing and spread, and eliminates the "disco effect."

Plus a lot of other features — a dedicated, color-adjustable low-power moonlight, tons of simulation functions, WiFi, a dedicated radio link between the lights, and USB as a backup.

It looks like a very nice light indeed, but it’s more than double the power that I need. In fact it seems like pretty much all of GHL’s lights are physically way too large for my tank, not just overpowered. Are y’all planning to make anything with this level of quality and features, but way smaller, in the future?

Why running the LED's at lower power by design? Thermal management is one of the primary reasons. The second is longevity. ATI does this and by running the LED's at a lower power which is how they can get away with passive cooling. There are probably other reasons such as support and warranty but these two are pretty much the main drivers.

I am not sure I would tinker and try to bypass their design. It is done for a reason and has absolutely no impact on the lights performance. Again, I will refer you to ATI's Straton who has been doing this for a good while now with excellent results.

In my opinion these are smart design decisions and I own zero GHL products.
