I am a college student with a love for aquariums, a relatively small budget, access to a wholesaler and a very expensive taste for zoas.

I first setup a reef in early November of 2018 using a 3.6 gallon tank. The tank is 18.5” x 6” x 7” which gets often mistaken for a 20 long in photos. I use an in-tank, air powered box filter as a mini refugium and a current maker. The first time I set it up I moved too quickly and challenged myself too much with the amount and variety of coral I had in the tank. Tank was set up on Nov. 20th of 2018 and crashed hard in the beginning of April 2019. Here it was March 8th, March 28th and April 11th.

I wasn’t doing frequent enough water changes and had too many LPS and SPS that drained the nutrients and minerals in the tank. Massive carbonate drop ended the tank. I sent a few corals to friends tanks to see if they would survive and a few did but most died.

I didn’t start the pico back up until November of 2019 and realized I needed to go much slower. To remind myself to do water changes I also decided to add a fish. I added a Trimma Hollemani, a pair of bumblebee shrimp, three blue leg hermits, two snails and a peppermint shrimp as my livestock.

I’ve slowly added corals, mostly zoas, to the tank and mostly just let it be except for weekly water changes and feeding a small pinch of mysis every other day.

Unfortunately my Trimma goby passed away a few weeks ago, likely due to age. And brown jelly disease just killed the hammer and short tentacle torch.

While I took my time with the pico I purchased an Innovative Marine NUVO Fusion 14 peninsula in early February of this year. And slowly set it up as well. I built my own stand and let the tank run for a week before adding Dr. Tim’s. I still hadn’t purchased a light so I ran it with fish only for another month.

I got an AI Prime HD last week and moved a few zoas and my green torch out of the 3.6 and into the 14 where they are now doing great! Current stocking is a pair of black bar chromis (the third came in very sickly and died), a Trimma Benjamini, 10 blue leg hermits and a feather duster.

For both tanks I plan on focusing mostly on zoas. So far I have scrambled eggs, space monsters, playboy bunnies, radioactive dragons eyes, sonic flares, armor of gods, red people eaters, Sunny ds, Green Bay Packers and one unknown. If these tanks continue to grow well then zoas will help pay my college .

I hope that everyone enjoys watching these builds grow!

Hi, hope is well

Sorry about the tank crashes but looks like you got experience from it. New build looks good. Love the scrambled eggs zoa. Keep the pics coming.

Thank you! I definitely did learn and grow from it and I now know how to prevent it. In a tank that small the salt I use contains enough trace elements for coral if I keep up with water changes and stay away from too many stonies (particularly SPS). More pictures will also definitely be coming. I have a lot more corals in mind for both tanks

I might change around the scape of the tank. I really like how it is now but I’m afraid that I won’t be able to incorporate as many zoas as I had hoped with this current scape. There isn’t a huge amount of open rock work currently and the torch makes another portion of it unable to be used due to its tentacles.

I did end up moving the rockwork around in both tanks and I like it a bit better now. I also moved one of the black bar chromis to the pico to heal because the other beat the crap out of it.

I got my first saltwater tank in college too. It was a fish only though. 20g. So, not much fish. I have no pictures though as that was back when you used film and not sure I ever took any. :)

26 years later and I now run reefs. Just a few. :)

Great job. I love the trimmas.

Trimmas have got to be some of my favorites. I also love Priolepis and Eviota gobies

So I got some frags today from a local reefer. One was supposedly a purple monster but it’s more likely a space monster. Small polyps and much more of a pink or sparkly purple.

Been a couple weeks with nothing new or changing but I got some new stuff in the tank so here’s an update!

I purchased some new zoas for the 14 which I got for a great price. A frag of AOI, a frag of buttkissers and a frag of space chaos. These have already got multiple heads growing which is awesome!

My green torch had a crack in the skeleton when I bought it and I recracked it when I moved it from the 3.6 to the 14. It seemed like it was healing normally but it turns out that it healed behind the cracked portion and forced that portion off of the main torch so now I have two torches. Both are healing nicely and are very healthy.

I did end up rescaping both tanks but haven’t added anything to the 3.6 since the space monsters and Pandora’s. The 14 now has much more room for coral on the rockwork and the fish feel more secure with more hiding spots.

lastly, I will likely be upgrading the 3.6 to a 5 gallon with a canister filter and a Kessil a80. The growth in that tank is extremely slow so I want to try better lighting and stronger filtration.

I honestly forgot I had this account because of everything else going on. I had a pretty big change happen to the pico in these past few months. In short it doesn’t exist anymore. I upgraded the 3.6 to a 10 gallon using a modded aqua clear 70 as a refugium.

Added a few corals and fish to both tanks and everything has been coming along really well. The 10 just has a clownfish so far but I’ve definitely got some other fish in mind. As for the 14, it has one black bar chromis who will likely be given to a friend bc he’s a jerk, a Trimma milta, a Trimma caesura (petco score) and a links goby (petco score).

I added a rock flower nem, a maxi mini, and a tiny rose bubble tip to the 10 and two rock flowers to the 14.

My zoas have really been taking off which I’m loving! The playboy bunnies are putting off new heads almost weekly now. I added two alveopora to the 14 recently and they are loving it. Lastly I just scored a Yoda zoa with two heads for $10 at my LFS because they didn’t know what it was
