So this probably should have been one of the first spotlights in that it would set a standard for what we describe.

Zoanthid Anatomy

So in this spotlight I hope that we can set a standard for how we discuss the color schemes of Zoanthids and their cousins. The following is a drawing I came up with to help us determine a "Standard Naming Scheme" for each part of a zoanthid. I'm sure that we could use the help of experts in this but hey we are a club so lets do our best.

BTW. This spotlight will focus primarily on the anatomy of zoanthids and once we get enough interest we will move towards to the anatomy of Palythoa and Zoanthus gigantus (AKA.. PEs, my favorite).

A: Tentacles (tentacular crown is the ring of tentacles )
I'm sure that most of us call the tentacles of a zoanthid as the skirt.

B:Oral Disc
I'm not sure what this area is called but most people call it the center.

C:
This is a there or not type of area. Some zoas have a change in their areas before they reach the mouth, or opening. This area doesn't always exist so it is a zoa to zoa basis.

D: MOUTH
I'm pretty sure that most people call this part the mouth.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So as you can see I can only provide a basic statement of what these parts are, so hopefully someone can make some better clarifications on these parts.

Any and all input is appreciated so Thanks In Advance for Posting.

BTW, don't forget to post any information/pic on our past "Spotlights"

LOL Jeremy beat me to it... I'm glad though, because talking about an oral disk sometimes makes me look funny to my middleschooler!

I guess Laurie's crush answered the question for us so I'll post it here, and update the drawing above

"body wall is the "stalk"
stolons are the basal connections between polyps (if they have them)
pedal disk is the round bottom attachment point to substrate
Oral disk is the flat surface between the mouth and the tentacles.
tentacular crown is the ring of tentacles
tentacles are the individual finger-like eptithelial projections around the oral disc.
Mouth is the opening to the gut which may be surrounded by an oral cone.

Then, you can talk about tentacle features, stolon featues, internal anatony (mesenteries, muscles, mesogleal inclusions, etc.)" (Eric Borneman)

Well thank you "Queen Bling",

I've mentioned it before, but I hope that once we get a few of these Spotlight threads going we can create an educational forum that includes articles on various topics and these Zoanthid specific spotlight series.

BTW, I'm going to upgrade the picture to display the stolons and pedal disc mentioned by Eric.
