Need advice , I don’t know if my Acan coral is getting too much light. Had it for 2 months now the top of it looks nice and fluffy every day however the sides are dying off . It’s in the middle of the display around 140 Par .

Bumping for more views.

It looks fine to me, I can't really see very clearly but I don't see polyps dying. I don't think 140 par is too much, I have mine on the sand directly under metal halides and it grows well.

How old is tank? Are your lps doing well? Do you feed the acans? What is your nitrate and phosphate?

acans should not be kept at those par levels..
or flow.
if you want to maintain colors, and health,
50-80 par is ideal
with moderate flow

you want them fluffy,
and sort of reaching for the light…
(spot feed every 4-5 days)

PRO TIPS on acans

* 100 PAR light

* broadcast dose RedSea AB+ 2X a week when lights go out (no dosing of amino acids will result in faded receding flesh, 100%)

Also wondering about tank age, feeding, and other coral health. In the photo that coral looks pretty good. Acans are hogs, they can eat constantly. I have always kept them low in the tank and kind of ignored them and they do ok. I do have a build going now where Im going to focus on them. I have a couple small frags right now that would eat everyday if I let them and they seem to be very hardy. I ripped the flesh on one the other day taking it off a frag plug to move it and it's doing fine so far.

Okay so I have a question, might sound stupid but Ive never been the best with science and stuff. How do you get the par readings without buying one of these since they are super expensive??? Like is there an app or something else or a way to visually tell? This kind of stuff is so not something Im good at!!

I used to have an acan dominate tank and found they would handle ridiculous amounts of light on both ends of the spectrum. I had some as low as 40 par and the ones on my top ledge rock at over 400. They all started around 150-200 par on a rack and slowly (about two weeks) got moved to their final location. That said, they seemed to grow fastest around 200 par. The ones at 40 grew but only around 1-3 new polyps every 60days vs 8-12 new polyps on the higher light ones. The ones over 300 par tended to take on more red or green hues vs the same ones at lower light that tended to be more pink/blue. Honestly that photo looks fine. The biggest warning sign for me was if they didn’t put out feeder tentacles if I target fed.

if you’ve got highend acans,
and want to keep their color….

never go above 100 par

@CherryCorals even lives by this mantra

but to each their own…

100 par is definitely industry standard but they will grow higher. You are gunna get some color changes though

This guy is at 350+ as as mentioned you can see colour change.

IMG_2538.jpeg

This is kinda shoved in a crack but light measures 150-220 around it. Both photos are 60 days apart.

This guy is actually in a cave under 60par. I’ll try to find original one polyp photo but this is after 8 months. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Mine are all on the sand or very close. The first one I got I had much higher and its color faded to a pastel color. I moved it down a long time ago but the colors never returned. I spot feed twice a week.

Why would dosing of amino acids result in receding flesh . I have been target feeding aquaforest amino acids every 2 days and reef roids once a week .

This one is mine, started as one polyp 3 years ago, its the size of a baseball now. Its on the sandbed under metal halides with 2 OR3 bars, I don't know the par but its pretty high, I dose amino's to my tank once or twice a week. I feed it maybe once a week, sometimes only once a month (I'm lazy about that).

I think its a hardy coral that can adapt to almost any condition.

Maybe it doesn't read right.... im.saying DOSE amino. Failure to dose some kind of amino will result in acans becoming lifeless and faded

I prefer RedSea AB+

Looks perfect. Assure not too much flow and feed mysis shrimp at least twice a week in lieu of powdered foods

Here's a couple of mine:
