My acro is forming a white spot at its base, Thought at first it was because my hammer was too close and was stinging it. I moved the hammer away about a month ago and the white spot has slowly continued to spread. Any ideas?

I suppose it’s possible, I took a light off that tank to start my other one, I’ll have to pop it out and throw it in the new tank. This is how it looked in February

That does look like shadowing, but who knows. Are you feeding your fish plenty (this is what gives the coral most of what they need)? Are your residual N and P too high?

I feed about half a cube of frozen mysis a day and pellets or flakes twice a day. The lighting definitely could be the issue, my 55 sprung a leak on a seal so I threw a clamp on it and set up a 40. I’ve been slowly moving things over to the 40 so I had to swap one of the lights over as well. The worst part of having to do this is I’ll be setting up my 120 In just a few weeks. When I checked my n and p a couple weeks ago they were both very low, those tests are old though so probably not very accurate anymore. I got my ph controller in the mail today so I’ll be setting that up with some kalkwasser later this week. My ph was high 7’s, yesterday morning my dkh was low 7’s so I got it up to almost 8.

If you are using a clamp on light, then look no more. There could be other things, but that is pretty big. That light is the only (nearly) way that the coral will get food and energy and it could be suffering significantly.

Sorry if that sounded confusing but no it’s not a clamp on light, it’s a clamp to keep the water in lol

Ouch! Those BBs are know for shadowing a bit, so still probably it. Some T5s would help, but no way in a tank with a bar clamp on it, right? Good luck.

My kids would hit that clamp in the first 10 minutes... and they are all at least teenagers.

Would a metal halide be ok though

Usually. If it is a good unit, then they perform better than nearly all LEDs. If it is a junk unit (odyssea, for example), then not so much. The best of breed type of MH cover well, are not high power, keep heat down and are great, but there are all kinds and not all of them are that good.

I am made a hybrid with 2 t5’s on the outsides (front and back) for my 120. The two black boxes will be in the middle. Won’t work on these smaller tanks but I also won’t have time to set up the 120 for another few weeks. I have a 3 year old son and I don’t have a clue how he hasn’t pulled that thing off yet…

It has gotten way worse, I’m going to have to pull it and frag what isn’t dead yet. Been a slow road but it’s going slowly the wrong way. She’s in a new tank with more light, don’t have a clue what is the issue but outside of the bleaching it is still growing.

Any chance you can get a good pic of those few black spots on the dead areas? I'd like to rule out AEFW.

If you are referring to the circled spots, they are little live spots that haven’t died yet
