Acros growing down and away from flow

All of them are growing pretty good. I don't have any complaints. But what makes them just grow sideways?
 
Pics would help. Corals tend to grow away, or with the flow being directed at them. Could also be lighting if they're growing down.
 
Corals that grow one way are in a tank that has flow going only one way. Or it's near a power head that is always moving water around it in one way. Random flow, and good light will help them grow out normal.
 
Generally they grow with the flow and towards the light. But if the flow is a bit harsh it will grow in the direction of the heavy flow. This is why varied flow is important.
